Hampshire Hawks have announced that Pakistan men’s Test captain Shan Masood will join their squad for the upcoming Global Super League (GSL). Masood, known for his consistency and technical prowess, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the team.
The left-handed opener has been capped 19 times in T20 Internationals for Pakistan. He recently led the national side to a historic 2-1 Test series victory against England in October, scoring a century in the opening match. Masood’s solid performances and leadership qualities make him a valuable addition to Hampshire’s lineup.
Hampshire’s GSL campaign is scheduled to begin on November 27 with a clash against Bangladesh’s Rangpur Riders. The competition will also feature strong teams like Pakistan’s Lahore Qalandars, Guyana’s Amazon Warriors, and Australia’s Victoria.
The Hawks have also confirmed that club captain James Vince will not participate in the tournament. Instead, Chris Wood will step in to lead the team.
Masood’s Journey: From Promising Talent to International Star
Shan Masood has carved out an impressive cricketing career, marked by his consistent performances and technical soundness as an opener. He first gained attention at the U-15 Asia Cup in 2002 after being spotted by former cricketer Aaqib Javed. In his first-class debut in 2007, he scored 54 for Karachi, forming a formidable 154-run opening partnership with Asad Shafiq.
Masood further honed his skills in England, where he had a record-breaking stint with Stamford School in 2009, amassing 1,237 runs at an average of 103. He also faced top-tier bowlers like Liam Plunkett and Graham Onions during his time with Durham University.
Back in Pakistan, Masood’s breakthrough came in the 2012-13 domestic season, where he scored 543 runs at an average of 54.30. This performance earned him a Test debut against South Africa in the UAE, a series where Pakistan sought stability at the top of the order.
Masood’s cricketing journey has been inspired by his admiration for Alastair Cook, reflecting the type of dependable and technically adept batsman he aims to be.
As Hampshire gears up for the GSL, Masood’s inclusion promises to strengthen their batting order and provide a touch of class to the tournament.
